Explore a network of narrow trails winding their way through woodlands of oak, birch and tall pines. This upper Gwendraeth Valley retreat, near Tumble in Carmarthenshire, is rich in habitats supporting insects, birds and diverse plant life. Free entry and parking.

Created and managed by Carmarthenshire County Council, Mynydd Mawr Woodland Park is a remarkable story of transformation. A former colliery site (The Great Mountain Colliery) has been transformed into a beautiful woodland and wildlife habitat. Wild flowers, trees and meadows have replaced an historic environment of industrial anthracite mining.

Keep an eye out for skylarks, woodpeckers, robins and wrens maybe even a kingfisher if you're lucky! An abundance of butterflies, dragonflies, bees, orchids, ferns, brambles, forests and wildflower meadows make this park a truly diverse mix of natural 'ingredients'. Worth a visit any at time of year.

Mynydd Mawr Map

There are two car parks, one off Heol Blaenhirwaun to the north and one off Heol Hirwaun Olau to the south. Both are free but the southern car park is the largest and closest to the pond walk and the start of the forest routes.

The park is also close to National Cycle Network's Route 47.
