YOU ARE HERE: HOME THREE CLIFFS BAY
One of the finest coastal locations of the Gower peninsula, with its iconic limestone 'Three Cliffs' rising sharply from a beautiful expanse of golden, sandy beach. Walking lovers definitely won't be disappointed. Parking is pay and display or free depending on how you decide to access the beach.
Three cliffs bay is flanked by Pobbles Bay to the east and Tor Bay to the west, the whole beach area is accessible on foot at low tide. The incoming tide swells the river running into Three Cliffs Bay (Pennard Pill), and divides the bay into beach on one side and castle hillside on the other, so your choice of parking when accessing the beach is important (see map), you don't want to get stranded on one side with your car parked on the other!
Dominating the cliffs above Pennard Pill stream and adjacent to Pennard Golf Club is the 12th century Pennard Castle. Originally a castle and settlement, it was abandoned in the 17th century due to sand encroachment. There are superb views from the castle on the south side, looking towards the bay, especially at sunset.
Be prepared for some quite steep, sandy hill paths from the top of the hillside and castle, going down to the beach and valley floor along Pennard Pill.
Coast, castle and cliffs.
Use the 'what3words' app for a precise location:
Small eastern car park: ///fortified.classmate.condition
Southgate car park: ///pixel.minute.rooks
Parkmill car park: ///relocated.resolved.marshes
Rear of St John the baptist church car park: ///slides.hillsides.utensil
Parking in Southgate, to the east, is run by the National Trust and is pay and display (Free to members). Parkmill has all day parking for a modest fee (large field) and is probably the best option for a day visit. Penmaen has free parking behind St John the Baptist church (fairly limited spaces, follow the small road over a cattle grid), further west there's a small car park by the bus stop but has extremely limited spaces.
