YOU ARE HERE: HOME LOUGHOR ESTUARY
Following the eastern edge of the mouth of the river Loughor, walk alongside a shore frequented by heron, egret, curlew, oystercatchers, gulls and more. A popular spot for photographers and bird watchers also has a children's play area. Parking is free.
Loughor, since the time of its ancient Roman occupiers, has always been an important river crossing ('Leucarum' being the name of the original Roman fort which was situated on the east bank). The 12th/13th centuries saw the arrival of the Normans who built a castle here to command this strategic fording point (the castle ruins can be found on a hill just off Castle Street, overlooking the estuary).
